Instructions Following Placement of Your Restoration

You have just had an inlay, crown or fixed bridge cemented onto your teeth. Great care was taken at the time the restoration was placed to assure that patient adaptation will be minimal. However, whenever something different happens to our bodies, a period of adaptation is normal and should be expected. So please observe the following suggestions:
  1. After the final cementation of your fixed restoration, it may take a few days to get used to the new restoration. If you feel the occlusion (bite) needs adjustment due to high occlusion please notify us? Bite adjustments are usually very simple and do not require anesthetic.
  2. Do not chew hard foods on the restorations for 24 hours from the time they were cemented. The cement must mature for about 24 hours to have optimum strength.
  3. Every endeavor is taken during restorative procedures to prevent or minimize sensitivity including maximum hydration, removal of smear layer debris with mild etching, sterilizing scrubs to kill bacteria in dentine tubules, dentine sealing with bonding enhancers, insulation with core buildup material and sealing of preparations prior to restoration cementation. If you experience this sensitivity please be patient while the pulp tissues of the teeth complete their normal healing process. It will disappear gradually over a few weeks. Infrequently sensitivity lasts longer than 6 weeks. Please call if this occurs.
  4. Irritation of gum tissue may occur in some difficult cases but usually disappears within several days with dental flossing on a daily basis. If your gums are sensitive use 1/4 tsp. salt in 8-oz warm water.
  5. Proper brushing and flossing is recommended to help you retain your final restoration.
  6. Visit us at regular six-month examination periods. Often problems that are developing around the restorations can be found at an early stage and corrected easily, while waiting for a longer time may require redoing the entire restoration. INADEQUATE RETURN FOR EXAMINATION IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT REASON FOR PROSTHESES FAILURE.
  7. If any problems or questions do arise always feel free to call me.
