The normal vibrations and agitation of the pulp (nerve) tissue of teeth during restorative procedures will commonly make them sensitive for a period of time. This sensitivity is usually associated with temperature, especially to cold application and sometimes to biting pressure. The amount of sensitivity and duration are dependent on the severity of the condition being treated and the general health, vitality and reparative ability of the pulp tissue of each individual tooth itself. It's possible that the reparative ability of a tooth can be so compromised that it may become hyperemic (continued discomfort) or even pulp death. Although this occurs less than five percent of the time, endodontics (root canal therapy) is sometimes necessary. Generally speaking teeth and gum tissue are sensitive for only a few days if at all. Please call our office if you are having any discomfort.Temporary RestorationsThe temporary restorations that were make and placed for you today will be in place for two to three weeks. Since these temporaries will be removed in a short period of time it is desirable that they be somewhat easy to remove at the time that the final restorations are seated. Therefore, a very weak cementing and sedative material is used to seal them to the teeth. Consequently, it is possible for you to dislodge them if eating sticky candy or hard, chewy food. In addition, these temporaries do not provide maximum protection for the surrounding tooth structure, as the final restorations will. Therefore, it is imperative that you exercise extreme caution with types of food and amount of chewing that you subject them to. If hard foods (hard pretzels, hard candy, hard chips etc.) are chewed on these teeth it is possible that enamel margins will fracture from the chewing surface requiring that we start over again with new impressions and remaking the final restorations. Since this would require additional time and effort for everyone involved, we ask that you be very careful for the next few weeks. If a temporary restoration does become dislodged, loose or fractures please call us as soon as possible, so that we can replace it before tooth movement or breakage results. If any questions or problems do arise please always feel free to call me.
