About Tooth WhiteningBelow are some frequently asked questions about this service: What is tooth whitening? Tooth whitening is a process that brightens teeth that are discolored, stained, or have been discolored because of injury. The whitening system is a mild solution that is retained in a custom filled appliance that is worn over your teeth while you sleep or during the day. What causes tooth discoloration? There are a number of causes, including smoking cigarettes or cigars, drinking certain beverages (coffee, soda, tea, wine), inadequate oral homecare, excessive fluoridation, tetracycline (antibiotic), tooth trauma, nerve degeneration, and the normal aging process. Stains on the teeth can either be on the surface or within the tooth structure. Who will benefit from tooth whitening?Just about everyone! Whitening is successful in at least 90 percent of patients, though it may not be an option for everyone. We will determine if you are a good candidate for the process. Tooth whitening is ideal for patients who have healthy, unrestored teeth and would like to have a whiter, brighter smile. Advantages of whiteningTooth whitening doesnt require any tooth structure to be removed, as do some other procedures to whiten teeth, and its also the most economical. Is it safe?Yes! The whitening system has been studied over the past several years and been proven to be safe and effective. The American Dental Association has granted its seal of approval. Are there any side effects? Some patients may experience slight gum irritation or tooth sensitivity, which is of short duration. Patients experiencing tooth sensitivity will be given a prescription fluoride gel to use. How do I safely whiten my teeth?Dr. Postol offers two different, safe whitening methods for you. We offer Deep Bleaching extreme whitening and Acquabrite take home bleaching trays. We can tell you which option would be best for your individual needs. How long do the results last? Results can last indefinitely with some very simple maintenence, wearing the tray for one night every 2-3 months. Your ability to maintain your teeth at their whitest will be influenced by the effectiveness of your oral homecare. Plaque and stain buildup will cause your teeth to darken again over time. How does it work? The active ingredient in most of the whitening agents is carbamide peroxide also known as urea peroxide; when water contacts this white crystal, the release of hydrogen peroxide lightens the teeth. The structure of the tooth is not changed; only the tooth surface is made lighter.
